Homes of Kim Jong-u & Kim Geun-su

Homes of Kim Jong-u and Kim Geun-su are places where you can feel accommodation, warmth and attractiveness of Hanok, the traditional Korean houses. Kim Jong- u’s home is established around 1750 by Mr. Lee from Jeonju and its overall shape looks like a “lying cow after a meal” according to traditional geographic principles, so its owners will enjoy abundant fortune for their lives. However, we are not sure of architect or foundation date of Kim Geun-su’s home, but it is estimated to be 200 years old. As front of the entrance is widely open and mountains are covering its back, its location is considered as a great place according to traditional geographic principles.

This place was designated as Cultural Property of Gangwon Province in 2006, and started to invite public since then. It is a typical Hamgyeong residential house built in 19th century, which is a tile-roof house with several wings in the shape of L. It is a historical house with under-heating system as the center and shows transition of house with several wings of the time. Oh Yun-hwan was a Confucian scholar from Sokcho, who put lots of eﬀorts in disciplining the next generation, and is considered as a patriot who built Hakmu Pavilion and participated in the 3.1 Independent Movement.
