Yeonggumjeong earned its name from its peculiar legacy of sonic vibrations. Originally a rocky mountain standing on the shore of the East Sea, it reverberated mysterious sounds when hit by the waves. The musical echo generated from the impact was similar to that of a Geomungo(Korean harp with six strings).

However, during the Japanese occupation, the mountain was flattened down to wide bedrock while undergoing a harbor construction. Along with the sunrise seen from the near by "Welcoming Sunrise Pavilion", the scenery that Mt. Seoraksan (Seorak Mountain) trail revealsd over the coast is a beautiful view of nature in harmony.
