Yeonggumjeong earned its name from its peculiar legacy of sonic vibrations. Originally a rocky mountain standing on the shore of the East Sea, it reverberated mysterious sounds when hit by the waves. The musical echo generated from the impact was similar to that of a Geomungo(Korean harp with six strings). However, during the Japanese occupation, the mountain was flattened down to wide bedrock while undergoing a harbor construction.
