'Naemulchi' village was given its name by Uam Song Si-yeol, a scholar and a high offcial of the Joseon Dynasty.
Following his political exile to Geojaedo (Geojae island) from Deokwon Hamgyeong-do, he and his escorts decided to stay in this village for the night. (But he couldn't leave the village for a few days due to heavy rains; after the storm had passed, he departed the village and named it "Mulchi" ("submerged town")).
